ERASMUS IP course on modeling: MOSYB

To improve the interdisciplinary communication between biologists, computer scientists, mathematicians and other specialists in the field of systems biology and synthetic biology, Latvia University of Agriculture in tight cooperation with 9 partners from 7 EU countries is organizing Erasmus Intensive Program (IP) “Modeling in systems biology and synthetic biology” (MoSyB). More detailed information about the event can be found HERE. This was the second ERASMUS IP course. The first one took place in 2012 and is described HERE.

ERASynBio strategically meets in Basel

The first strategic conference has been held at ETH Zurich premises in Basel, January 2013, to find out the most important items to be addressed in the development of Synthetic biology in Europe and USA. Many contacts were established hopefully leading to great scientific collaborations in the future. Latvia was represented by three persons (record so far): Uldis Kalnenieks, Uldis Berkis and Egils Stalidzans.

Conference Synthetic Biology 6.0 in London, July 2013

Hopefully this becomes a tradition for Egils Stalidzans and Jurijs Meitalovs to visit Synthetic Biology X.0 conferences. That is the globally largest synbio event taking place every two years.

Great and contradicting speeches and interesting poster/exhibition area were making the conference successful.

We saw much more familiar faces compared to the conference 5.0 in Palo Alto, San Francisco!

This event was hosted by Imperial College London that presented large plans about expansion of synthetic biology in a new dedicated building. Hopefully we will be invited for a drink at the official opening ceremony…

Delegation from Newcastle in Riga, February 2013

This was the second ERASynBio Twining project meeting. This time in Riga. Anil Wipat, Jennifer Hallinan and Matthew Pocock met Latvian part of the proposal writers: Egils Stalidzans and Jurijs Meitalovs.

We paid also a visit to the Institure of Microbiology and Biotechnology meeting Uldis Kalnenieks and Reinis Rutkis.

We had even a short handshake and chat with the minister of Agriculture Laimdota Straujuma. About six months later she became the first female prime minister of Latvia.
